What “Natural” Cosmetic Surgery Really Means

One of the most important aspects of my job is to make sure that you look natural.  Whether it is a facelift, breast augmentation, or tummy tuck, I want you to still look like yourself.

All too often plastic surgeons chase an ideal form.  The problem is that even though an “ideal” breast may have certain proportions, it may not look right on your body.

Too much effort to “idealize” your body may make you look less natural.  For instance, areolas are not naturally perfect circles, nor are they perfectly symmetric.  The same is true of eyelids, and facial folds.  Studies, in fact, have shown that when patient s are shown photos of themselves that have been perfectly symmetrized (their face made of two mirror images of only one half) both they and an independent observer thought the image looked worse then the real, slightly asymmetric version.

I think that it is very important to respect that the human body has natural asymmetries and irregularities, and eliminating them can give an unnatural appearance. This is really where the art of plastic surgery becomes important.  Operations in this field cannot be standardized.  Every case must be individualized to achieve your aesthetic goals while still preserving the features that make you unique.
