Achieving a more rested, youthful appearance can be one of the primary benefits of eyelid surgery; however, for patients experiencing extreme skin sagging above the eyes, the procedure may provide functional advantages as well. Below, our board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City, Neal Goldberg, MD, FACS, discusses how eyelid surgery can have “eye-opening” effects beyond just aesthetic improvement.
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty or an “eyelid lift,” is a procedure designed to refresh and rejuvenate the skin and tissue of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty, in particular, targets the upper region of the eyelids to remove/reposition excess fat and tighten the skin, which can help to restore the supportive tissue structures around the eyes. In severe cases of drooping tissue hanging over or past the eyelashes — referred to as “hooding” — upper blepharoplasty may help to correct the concern and alleviate a potentially obstructed view by opening up a patient’s field of vision.
With all of this in mind, it is important to understand that eyelid surgery should not be considered a procedure that addresses poor eyesight caused by an ophthalmological condition (such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or other internal afflictions of the eye). To improve vision, eyelid surgery can only be helpful in cases of excess skin causing a visual obstruction. Dr. Goldberg and his team ensure each patient is thoroughly informed about every aspect of their prospective surgery and the realistic effects that can be expected.
Dr. Goldberg is passionate about educating New York City patients on the types of results they can expect to achieve after blepharoplasty.
