Post-Weight Loss Surgery

Congratulations on taking back control of your body and your life! Massive weight loss is a massive accomplishment. Often, however, there are skin excesses and physical distortions that remain. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Goldberg, has specific training and experience in body contouring procedures for the massive weight loss patients. Common procedures include: arm liftbreast liftthigh liftneck lift, and facelift. Typically these are staged in order of importance to the patient.

Also known as belt lipectomy, body lift surgery is an extensive surgical procedure that reshapes the midsection after massive weight loss. The procedure is often combined with reshaping of the inner/outer thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen. A body lift is common for patients who have experienced massive weight loss or gastric bypass weight loss procedures. The surgery is conducted to remove excess skin that causes cosmetic and functional problems for the patient.

Skin Tightening After Medical Weight Loss Injections

Weight loss medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide can be a very effective way to manage hunger and lose weight. When complemented with a healthy diet and regular exercise, medical injections can facilitate noticeable weight loss by helping individuals feel fuller faster, and allowing them to adopt healthier eating habits. However, excess hanging skin once patients lose weight is a notable concern — whether their goals were achieved with bariatric surgery or weight loss injections.

Dr. Goldberg offers a myriad of skin tightening procedures to trim excess tissue and resculpt areas commonly affected by skin laxity (sagging skin) after weight loss. Treatment options to restore a sleeker, more defined body contour in areas with loose skin include:

  • Arm lift: Commonly referred to as “bat wings,” the supportive structures of the upper arms are prone to weakening over time due to aging, pregnancy, and weight loss. Brachioplasty can circumferentially restore support in this area by removing excess skin and fat in the upper arms.
  • Thigh lift: An inner thigh lift not only aesthetically improves the thigh contour after weight loss, but the procedure can also reduce irritation, swelling, and chafing caused by excess skin rubbing together.
  • Tummy tuck: Sagging, crepey skin tends to accumulate in the abdomen and midsection, especially after weight loss and pregnancy. If you’re bothered by sagging skin left after weight loss injections, a tummy tuck can trim loose tissue and help reshape the belly.
  • Injectables and fillers: Weight loss injections can leave behind a lack of volume in certain areas, such as the temples and mid-face. Fillers and injectables offer a non-surgical technique to restore depleted volume in the face and add youthful fullness to the facial contours.
  • Facelift and neck lift: A facelift and neck lift can redefine the jawline and smooth sagging skin along the lower face, also known as jowls. Depending on the nature of goals, a facelift and neck lift can be pursued as separate procedures, or combined into one treatment plan.

If you’ve arrived at your ideal weight range and still have loose skin negatively impacting your self-confidence, don’t hesitate to discuss your goals with our team. As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Westchester, Dr. Goldberg can remove excess skin and fill in volume where necessary.

Who is a Good Candidate for Post-Weight Loss Body Contouring?

It may be to your advantage to consider this surgery if you are tired of the excess skin on your inner and/or outer thighs, buttocks, hips, or abdomen. Among other characteristics that suggest body lift surgery include:

  • Discomfort and hygiene issues related to skin folds
  • Dramatic weight reduction after bariatric surgery
  • Body weight has stabilized

Contraindications for this procedure include hypertension, bleeding disorders, diabetes, heart disease, and asthma. If you have any of these issues, please discuss with Dr. Goldberg and your physician before considering this type of surgery.

How is a Body Lift Performed?

Dr. Goldberg will carefully mark the incisions, strategically placing them in the natural folds of your skin where they will be best hidden. After general or local anesthesia, and antibiotics are administered, he will make the incisions, and the loose skin is lifted and removed. Liposuction is conducted as needed. Treatment progresses in a circumferential manner, meaning that the surgeon works outward from his starting point in a circle.

Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed. Depending on the complexity of your surgical goals, future procedures (or staged body lift procedures) may be performed.

“I’m a problem solver. I adapt my techniques to meet each patient’s goals. I apply creative thinking while always adhering to sound principles.”

What Can I Expect From the Body Lift Recovery Period?

You will need to recover in bed for the first 24 hours, walking with assistance on day two following surgery. After one week post-surgery, the drains that were inserted to collect fluids during the healing process are removed, but compression garments should typically be worn for approximately six weeks. Patients usually regain most of their strength and energy about 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Dr. Goldberg treats patients from Scarsdale, Yonkers and many other communities in Westchester, Bergen, and lower Fairfield County. For more information about Body Lift surgery, call our office for a consultation at 914-722-1600.
