When it comes to cosmetic surgery, a premium is placed on achieving natural-looking results with few if any noticeable scars. Still, an operation requires an incision (or two or three). Although typically well-hidden and well-healing, some patients experience more visible scarring than others. And even if the scar is small, certain people may still find it troublesome. Dr. Neal Goldberg, our board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, offers many options for scar revision that can help.
Depending on the type of scar, it may be useful to remove a section from the center of the scar in a specific pattern and then close the sides up for a smaller imprint. If the scar is larger, a skin graft may be recommended. Some scars extend across different anatomical areas, in which case a Z-plasty or W-plasty technique may be used, which uses a Z- or W-shaped incision to enhance movement in the area while narrowing the size of the scar.
Our med spa services include laser skin resurfacing, which can be helpful in reducing the appearance of small facial scars, acne scars, and other general scars. When you discuss your concerns with Dr. Goldberg, he will recommend the best approach for your needs and goals.
