Abdominoplasty can be a profoundly rewarding procedure for patients who would like to address the effects of age, pregnancy, gravity, and weight fluctuation on the abdomen. Unlike some other body contouring options that only correct excess skin or fat deposits, tummy tuck surgery is an all-encompassing procedure that can treat the muscles, skin, and fat simultaneously for a tighter and firmer abdomen. Due to this comprehensive approach, some patience will be required during the healing process. Dr. Neal D. Goldberg, our plastic surgeon in Westchester, can give you a brief primer on what you can expect as your body heals after tummy tuck surgery:
- Immediately after surgery: A friend or family member will need to drive you home and help you around the house for a few days. Drains will be placed to prevent fluid buildup. Dr. Goldberg will show you the best ways to walk, rest, and sleep while reducing stress on your incisions. Light
- A few days after surgery: Your drains will be removed and you will be able to shower approximately 48 hours later. We recommend taking sponge baths until then. Dr. Goldberg will advise a nutritious diet of fruits, veggies, protein, and immune-boosting antioxidants while you heal.
- One to two weeks after surgery: Much of the initial swelling should be resolved and many patients return to non-strenuous work duties at this time; however, we advise taking your time during recovery and not rushing to resume work before you’re ready.
- Six weeks after surgery: Depending on your unique needs, many individuals are able to gradually return to exercise and their normal routines. This is also typically when patients can stop wearing their abdominal binders.
The exact length of your recovery will depend on your own unique rate of healing. There is generally less downtime after a mini tummy tuck when compared to a standard abdominoplasty, but all patients should still avoid exercise for at least four weeks after surgery.
