If you have excess, hanging skin in the midsection, you may know about the various treatment options available to remove loose skin, smooth the abdominal contour, and address any lingering skin elasticity. A tummy tuck and a panniculectomy are two of the most common procedures performed to resculpt excess abdominal skin, but these treatments are not interchangeable. Below, Dr. Neal Goldberg explains the difference between tummy tuck surgery and a panniculectomy to help patients determine the best possible treatment for your goals.
Abdominoplasty
A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure aimed at creating a smoother, firmer abdominal profile. It addresses excess fat and skin, often restoring weakened or separated muscles in the abdominal wall. While the procedure can help alleviate irritation and inflammation caused by excess skin, tummy tuck surgery is not performed out of medical necessity.
Panniculectomy
Unlike a tummy tuck, the purpose of a panniculectomy is more medically-oriented than cosmetic. This procedure is performed to remove the “pannus,” or the skin and fat creating an “apron” of excess tissue over the genitals and thighs. A pannus can develop after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or as the result of other conditions. While hanging skin is addressed, a panniculectomy notably doesn’t tighten internal musculature. That said, the procedure can alleviate issues caused by overhanging skin, such as chafing, hygiene problems, rashes, or ulcers.
