Tear Trough Filler

The tear troughs refer to a crease between the lower eyelids and cheeks. When the tear troughs are particularly deep, patients often feel they look more tired or aged — this can become more pronounced as you get older and facial volume starts to diminish. Tear trough fillers offer a treatment option to reduce the depth of these creases and make the area underneath the eyelids look fuller. Not only can a tear trough filler provide a more vibrant and youthful appearance in the face, but it can also improve the shadows under the eyes that may give off an exhausted impression. Dr. Neal Goldberg, our extensively trained aesthetic plastic surgeon, offers tear trough filler treatment with Restylane-L® to provide patients with effective and natural-looking results of the highest quality.

What is Tear Trough Filler?

Tear trough filler is typically made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that can help rejuvenate the face and restore lost facial volume. Restylane-L®, in particular, is a clear hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that can add volume to the tear troughs, hands, temples, or lips, among other depleted features. With an experienced injector, the result of tear trough fillers can be  fuller and tighter-looking skin that allows patients to feel more refreshed. Since Restylane-L® is not derived from animal products, there should be no need for allergy testing before treatment.

Is Tear Trough Filler Right for Me?

Anyone who wants to correct deep or sunken tear troughs can be a candidate for treatment. Each person is assessed on an individual basis, but those who would benefit from a tear trough filler generally include patients who seek:

  • A fuller, smoother look under the lower eyelids
  • Less pronounced tear troughs
  • Reduced puffiness and dark circles under the eyes
  • A more energetic and youthful appearance

A tear trough filler often provides the best results when the lower eyelid skin is relatively thick with minimal sagging and/or excess skin. Dr. Goldberg or our aesthetic nurse injectors can evaluate your tear troughs to determine if Restylane-L® can provide the results you desire, or if combining injections with a more long-term treatment — like lower blepharoplasty — is advised to achieve the best outcome.

What Can I Expect During Treatment With Tear Trough Fillers?

Treatment with a tear trough filler takes place during a convenient in-office treatment. A local anesthesia known as lidocaine is included in the Restylane-L® formula to help increase patient comfort during injections, but an additional numbing agent can be applied to the skin beforehand if desired. During injections, an ultra-fine needle is used to deliver Restylane-L® into the tear troughs and plump the skin. Swelling and redness may occur, but should subside naturally after injections. We advise patients to avoid anti-inflammatory pain relievers and certain other medications, as they can increase bruising after your treatment. Rejuvenation can be visible soon after injections, but it can take two to four weeks to realize the full results of Restylane-L®. While tear trough fillers only provide temporary rejuvenation, patients typically report excellent results that last between six months and one year.

How Much Does Tear Trough Filler Cost?

The cost of tear trough correction is approximately $950 per injection depending on how much filler is necessary to achieve your goals, the extent of the concerns exhibited, and other details unique to your treatment plan. Our team will be able to provide you with a cost estimate once your needs and goals are assessed.
